Kids have a way of getting their hands on almost everything in the house. However, there are some things that you should not allow them to get their hands on. One of these things is medicine. This is because medicine can seriously harm them when used in the wrong way. Pharmaceutical companies have made an effort to protect children by using child resistant packaging. Unfortunately, you cannot depend on this packaging alone. Below are some tips for keeping medicines safely out of your children’s hands:
With children 2 or older, it is important to explain the dangers of medicines. Make sure they know that the medicines can make them very sick if they try to take it on their own. Let them know it is important for mom, dad, or any other responsible adult who cares for them to give any medicines.
If possible, use a high cabinet where the children cannot reach. To keep your children safe from medicine, you have to ensure that all medication in your house is stored under lock and key. Don’t forget to the cabinet locked at all times, and to keep the key in a safe place.
If you have children, you should never leave medicine out of the cabinet, even for short periods of time. A second is enough for a child to swallow a pill that can harm him/her. After taking your medicine at any given time, make sure that you return the remaining medicine back to the cabinet.
If you want to discard medicine that is past the expiration date, make sure that you do it very carefully. Don’t just throw the medicine away in your normal garbage bin. Kids can easily find it there. Discard your medicine in places where you are sure that you children cannot get to it.
