It seems like everyone has advice for everything, and that includes cooking, house cleaning, and laundry. Which tips can you believe? Which are too good to be true or just wrong? Good Housekeeping took a look at some laundry myths, and here are three tips you can definitely ignore:
1. Soak the fabric in salt water to set the dye?Nope! Clothes are pre-treated and dyes are set during production. By the time it gets to you, it's as set as it's going to be. The best thing you can do to keep colors from running is to wash according to the care instructions. Certain types of fabrics and clothes will last longer when cared for properly, anyway. If you have a piece of clothing that always bleeds, wash it alone or spray it with fabric softener. Hopefully, you'll be enjoying colorful clothes without creating polka-dotted whites!
2. Heat on cool to prevent shrinkage? False. Here's something you might not have known: it's not the heat in the dryer that shrinks clothing, it's actually over-drying. When all of the moisture is taken out of clothes, they begin to shrink. Some dryers have settings to detect this and shut off on their own, but if you don't have one, then stick to small loads and check dryness frequently, removing clothes as soon as they're dry.
3. Use more detergent to get clothes cleaner? No, it's the opposite! Too much detergent causes too many suds, which can trap dirt and redistribute it. This can leave a gross film on your clothes and on your clothes washer. Follow the directions for detergent, and measure it out each time.
Work smart with these exposed myths!
